KTM 990 Adv

21/18 Baja: This set is a 1.60/1.85x21" front wheel with a 2.50/2.75x18" rear wheel.  Built for the serious off-roader, who wants to pick through the gnarliest terrain and have the widest variety of off-road tires available.  Able to use rim locks to allow for fluctuation in tire pressure.  The 1.60x21" front would be an A60 Excel rim which is the toughest aluminum available and actually saves $55 on the black Baja set price above.

21/18 50/50: Uses a 1.85x21" front rim with a 3.50x18" rear.  This is our most popular off-road set.  Built for what the 950/990 is able to do from the factory.  Significantly increases your ability to take your 950/990 off-road without sacrificing the on-road performance.  No more wheel bending here.

21/18 Stock: Is a 2.15x21" front wheel with a 4.25x18" rear wheel.  These are the stock sizes, which are now available in Excel rims.  If you want to add strength to the rim, but don't really take your 950/990 off-road and like the 21/18 set-up, then these are the sizes for you.

19/17 Canyon Carver: Will keep a similar geometry to the bike, but give you much improved on-road performance, superior braking, and much better tire selection for the road.  Still, if you want to do the occasional fire-road, this set is best.  Similar size wheels to the R12GS and other big dual sport bikes.

17/17 Super Motard: If you want to do all your riding on the street and have every street tire choice available and even the possibility of the occasional track day, then the 17/17 is the set for you.  You will most likely need to get a steering dampener and your steering will quicken significantly on the road, but will be well worth it, while you tear up the streets.

Some FAQ for these wheels

Why does black cost so much more on the Excels?: These are completely custom rims because of the stock lace pattern and so the only way we can get them is in silver.  When we get them in silver, we have to strip the anodize and screen print, polish, and re-anodize in black.  This process is very time consuming, we are merely covering our costs.  We are working to decrease prices and getting rims in black and as soon as we can decrease the cost, we will decrease the price.  In the mean time, we will continue to provide the highest quality wheels for these motorcycles.

We primarily use Excel rims now because they are made from superior 7000 series aluminum and they are dimpled so makes better for changing angles, aesthetics, and the way the nipple seats in the hole.

In most cases when you want the same gearing, geometry etc. we go with the 50/50 set-up.  We replace the front rim with a 1.85x21" Excel and the rear with a 3.50x18" on the 950/990's.

On the front, you can use the same stock front tire 90/90-21, it just fits the rim properly, improving your off-road performance without sacrificing much if any on-road performance as hundreds of riders can attest.

On the rear, the narrower rim gives you greater off-road tire selection, because you can use a 140 size tire without the chance of mangling the rim and still be able to use the 150 if you prefer. The narrower rim pulls the sidewalls of the tire in some, especially on the 150 to give you greater traction off-road, again without sacrificing much on-road performance. You will wear out the 150 more prematurely if you use a lot on the road because it will wear out the center part of the tire.

If you want to use more off-road we can go even narrower or if you want to do more street, we can go with stock sizes or recommend going with a 19" front and 17" rear.

Wheelset prices are with Superlaced wheels and Stainless spokes and nipples. A Superlace is where we improve the lace pattern, adding an extra cross and drill and countersink the rims and hubs to support it.

A full wheelset with black rims and stock hubs is: $1498

A full wheelset with black rims and billet hubs in any color is: $1585

In both cases, silver rims save $150.

If you send us just the hubs or the full wheels(no charge to unlace), you save $560 off of the stock wheelset price above. The truth of the matter is that your stock wheels all together are more valuable then the savings as either a second wheelset for street tires, to sell on the open market(especially if straightened and trued, which is typically about $100 per wheel if bent), or to hold onto if you ever sold the bike. Still if you don't want to deal with the hassle and want to save the money now, then send the wheels/hubs in.

If you want us to re-use your stock spokes and nipples, you save $128/wheel. The stock spokes and nipples are plated steel, so they are susceptible to rusting, so if they are starting to show signs, now is the time to replace.

For the strongest set of off-road wheels possible: If you want the same exact sizes as stock, 1.85x21" front and 2.50x18" rear and as a second set of wheels.

On the front a 7000 series 1.85x21 Excel Takasago rim, Superlaced with Stainless Spokes and Nipples, and a billet 6061 hub.

On the rear a 7000 series 2.50x18 Excel Takasago rim, Superlaced with Stainless Spokes and Nipples, and a billet 6061 hub.

Your strongest overall set-up would be an A60 front(1.60x21") instead of the 1.85x21" front.  Better aluminum and narrower rim will be better for picking through rocks and taking hits.

Would not go narrower than the 2.50" on the rear and A60 only available in a 1.60x21, 1.85x19, and 2.15x19 primarily for dirtbikes.

Wheelset would be $1522 with 1.85x21/2.50x18($150 less with silver rims, $50 more for 950/990ADV)

Wheelset with A60 front would be $1467(not available with silver rims, $50 more for 950/990ADV).

When it comes to making your 950/990 more street worthy, we recommend the 19/17 set-up because it keeps that stock geometry and heightens all of the street capabilities of the KTM.  As Woody says, it's like a GS with balls.
